The ABCs of Grade Five
The ABCs of Grade Five
Ms. Chalmers’ Class
A– absences – please phone the school and speak with the secretaries to let us know that your child will not be at school.
B– birthdays – you are welcome to send along birthday treats as long as they do not contain any nut products. Please make sure there is enough for each child.
C– Clothing – I encourage you to send a change of clothing in case there is a mud puddle (or other) accident. These clothes can hang on your child’s coat hook. Please put in a small bag with your child’s name on it.
D– discipline – Our class will work together to come up with a list of rules and expectations in our classroom and we will continually review them. I use verbal praise, thumbs up, and stickers for students who are “caught doing it right”. I do not expect any major problems. If a child continues to slip up I will talk to you and/or send home a ‘class rules’ reminder that you can discuss with your child. We will work together to help your child. If there is a negative behavior that is an on-going concern the principal may be asked to assist with the problem. The school counselor, Ms. Henshaw, is also a very good resource for a child who needs some guidance.
E– Energy! – I encourage the children to be physically active during recess and lunch. We also have ‘energy’ breaks during the day to change the pace. Students will be involved in DPA – Daily Physical Activity and are required to have proper running shoes at school every day.
F– food –please send healthy, nutritious, PEANUT FREE food to school. As you are no doubt aware sugary foods and drinks can alter mood and behavior. I discourage delivering ‘fast food’.
F– FUN! – We expect to have a lot of fun this year. It is a joy to spend this year with your child.
F– Field Trips - should we have any field trips this year I welcome and encourage parents to help drive, participate, and support these valuable learning opportunities for your child.
G– gym – as soon as gym schedules are worked out I will post a schedule on our class website. With a school this size we usually get two times per week, but we also go outside when we can and do exercise in the classroom. Children will need to wear running shoesfor all physical activity. Proper footwear is important to prevent injuries and to maximize your child’s performance.
H– hot lunches – our P.A.C. at Katzie will be looking for volunteers. Information about hot lunches will be available on the P.A.C Facebook page. If you wish to order hot lunch, please visit https://munchalunch.com
J– juggling – I know parents are always busy trying to juggle home, work, extra curricular activities, daycare, cooking, cleaning, etc.! If there are any challenges or changes to your child’s life that may affect their feelings or behavior, please let me know.
K– kind – each child will be expected to be kind to classmates, siblings, friends, and family. In my class I encourage children to be kind, friendly, and caring.
L – library – your child be bringing a book home. Please ensure that your child returns their book to school each week. Ms. Van Santen & Ms. Onotera are our teacher librarians.
M– messages – If you need to get in touch with me, you can write a message in your child’s planner, send me an email ([email protected]) or call the office and leave a message for me to return 778-571-4080
N– Nuts – our classroom is a nut aware room. I ask you not to send nut products to school.
N– newsletters – do get into the habit of checking out the Katzie school website and all will be revealed!
O – open house – Thursday, September 19th. Please stop by so we can meet and your child can show you around.
P – pick up and drop off – children line up outside by the eagle circle. Careful of opening doors! Children are expected to behave appropriately in line – being kind, friendly, and caring towards others. Children are dismissed from the inside stairwell doors each day.
Q– Quiet voices – each child is expected to use a quiet voice in the classroom.
R– routines – we will spend the first few weeks of school focusing on routines so that children will be comfortable in their Grade Five learning environment.
S– school supplies – Please send them in as soon as possible. I will store them in the classroom. If you need further information about supplies please let me know.
S– scholastic book orders. Each month I’ll send home the scholastic book order flyers. If you’d like to place an order you may order them online through the Scholastic website or send them in with a cheque made payable to Ms. Chalmers(I like to be able to charge them instead of waiting for them to cash your checks). It usually takes a couple of weeks from the time that the order is placed for the books to arrive.
S– sense of humour – I love to laugh and hope the children do too!
T– terrific! – Katzie Elementary is a terrific school.
V– volunteering – Field trips usually need parent drivers & I’d love for you to join us for these special events.
W– water – Do put a name on your child’s water bottle. Staying hydrated is important.
W– web sites – Make sure you stay informed by regularly checking both the class website https://mschalmersclass.weebly.com and the Katzie Website https://www.surreyschools.ca/schools/katzie. Links can be found on our class website home page.

X– x-ray vision!!! Please check your child’s backpack each night for notices. You can also check for any uneaten items!
Yyawn! – Young children need down time and lots of rest in order to maximize their learning. Please ensure they get a good night’s sleep.
